The smiling fellow sitting on the wall is my biological birthfather.
Today was the first time I have seen him. I cannot, after decades of wondering what he looked like, express clearly what I think of this photograph of him. I knew he was short, but any other description of him is not what I see in this picture. We don't yet know the date the picture was taken, but we figure it is late 1940's - early 1950's, perhaps even as late as my birth year 1955. He was 30 years old in 1955, and I'm not sure he looks that old in this photo. The location is also a mystery. Is it Niagara Falls, or someplace in Massachusetts?
I love how he is dressed, cuffs turned up on the jeans, T-shirt tucked in, sleeves rolled, watch, and a huge ring. On the far right the shirt says something like "MacNare Speed Shop" with a drawing of a race car on the front. My birthfather was into race cars, and word has it that he and his buddies built a few. He is sporting a flat top hair style that could be from his Air Force days, past in WWII, or upcoming in Korea. Maybe it is after he came back from Korea? Or is it in Korea?
He looks more like my sister to me, she thinks he looks like me. My sister's boyfriend's comment was, that he is obviously gay. John thinks he was just very conscious of how to dress. We all love that he has a huge grin, as we have been told he was very well liked, and a "character". I think that shows here, and makes me smile too.
I've waited 58 years for this photo, and it's really good to see him.
